Presented by Yasser Elhariry, a French search candidate. By the time of Jab'sdeath in Paris in 1991, Edmond Jab's (b. Cairo, 1912) was translated and read all over the world, and his work had been commentated by some of the most influential philosophers, critics, thinkers and writers of the last fifty years. But who was Jab's the Egyptian? How did he live in Cairo? Why did he start by writing an outmoded style of poetry? Why did he do so in French? In addition to outlining such concepts as place, homeliness and 'remaining' that permeate the poet's thought and work, this presentation explores the short-lived but intense francophone literary and artistic cultures of early twentieth century Cairo and their unique potential to re-question and expand current understandings of the notion of "francophonie.".
