University of Maine at Farmington's UMF Dancers to Perform 2008 Winter Concert, November 11

FARMINGTON, ME (November 4, 2008)--University of Maine at Farmington's UMF
Dancers will perform their 2008 Winter Concert at 7:30 p.m., Tuesday, Nov.
11, in Nordica Auditorium in UMF's Merrill Hall. The presentation will
feature eight original, student-created dances set to Irish step dance
tunes and uilleann pipe music, the characteristic national bagpipe music of
Ireland.

The concert is inspired by Thomas E. Coughlin's novel "Miss O'Malley's
Maine Summer," the story of a young Irish woman who travels to Wells,
Maine, for summer work to help her family purchase a house in Ireland. The
young woman's experiences with happiness and heartbreak as a stranger in
America provide the backdrop for the dancers' improvisational performances.

Under the direction of Margaret Gould Wescott, artistic director, the UMF
Dancers this year include: Rebecca Douin, Manchester; Shantelle Forgue,
Pittsfield; Katie Rose Gergosian, Topsham; Elena Kohout, Farmington;
Rebecca LaRovera, Kingfield; Kristin Lewis, Lincoln, N.H.; Shelly Meservey,
Farmington; and Chrissy Miner, Gorham.

The UMF Dancers is a post-modern, improvisational dance company committed
to creating classes, dances, performances and lecture demonstrations around
themes of race, social class and gender. The groups' creative work explores
the integration of the body, mind and spirit.

Tickets for the Winter Concert are available at the door the night of the
performance and are $5 for the general public and free for UMF students
with student I.D.
